Traditional stories

A collection of traditional stories from the Wairarapa.
This collection of traditional Wairarapa Maori stories has been collated so that they are available to anyone who is interested.
As with many stories, myths and legends there are different versions based around the same characters, locations and central theme. This assortment is no different but what we have endeavoured to do is locate the version as recorded by a well known narrator or scribe. In a few cases we have condensed and or added to what was a more complicated telling of the tale.

Please remember that while the descriptive term story or legend is used for the following the people are actual historical figures and the events by and large did take place.

Sometimes supernatural beings and happenings are explained by natural events but perhaps we will leave the explanation of such things to another section of ako rangitaane, one that will come later.

The stories are as far as possible presented in a chronological order.
